Medtech country Switzerland is Europe's most innovative country
The Swiss Medtech industry is a strong driver for the Swiss economy, as it creates an above-average number of jobs compared to other industries, as a recently published study by Swiss Medtech and the Helbing Group has shown. This has led to an increase in turnover of over 6% in the last two years.
The “European Innovation Scoreboard 2024” has also recognized Switzerland as the most innovative European country compared to the 27 other EU countries and 11 other European countries.
Switzerland is one of the most attractive research locations in Europe. Many foreign post-graduate students work and conduct research here, not least because cooperation with international partners is particularly frequent.
However, in Switzerland, as everywhere in Europe, the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) is the most challenging issue. Bureaucratic, innovation-inhibiting and extremely high-cost, it has led to 80% of Swiss companies hiring additional staff to deal with the requirements in recent years, and 60% of companies have had to allocate human resources from their development and research departments.
More than 20% of Swiss Medtech companies, as well as other European companies, apply for initial approval of their products via the FDA in the USA.
